OK, so you've had an accident. Now what?

Did you know that you have the power to choose your own body shop?

Step 1

At the Scene

STEP 1: CHECK YOURSELF FOR INJURIES.
STEP 2: CHECK ON THE WELL-BEING OF YOUR PASSENGERS.
STEP 3: GET YOURSELF AND YOUR PASSENGERS TO SAFETY.
STEP 4: CALL 911.
STEP 5: WAIT FOR HELP.
STEP 6: EXCHANGE INFORMATION.
    Full name and contact information

    Insurance company and policy number

Driver's license and license plate number

Type, color and model of vehicle

    Location of accident
STEP 7: DOCUMENT THE ACCIDENT.
Take pictures of both vehicles from different angles.     Include the license plate of the other car.

Write down the names and addresses of all parties     involved, including any passengers in the other     vehicle.

Talk to witnesses and get their contact information     as well.

When the police come ask where you can get a copy     of the accident report.
STEP 8: NOTIFY YOUR INSURER AND START THE CLAIMS PROCESS.

Step 2

Contact insurance and make the claim.

You might want to do this while you are at the scene. They may have some helpful info for you.

Step 3

Choose a repair shop.

It is your right to choose the repair shop you wish to work with. Your insurance company can limit the amount that they will reimburse you though, so if you choose an expensive shop you may have to pay the difference.

Step 4

Get your car to the shop

If the car is OK to drive, you can simply drive it there. If not, you will need to find a tow truck. Your insurance provider should be able to help you with this.

Step 5

Follow up and communicate during the repair process,

Confirm repairs are being done the way you want them and schedule a time to pick up your car.

Step 6

Pick up your check.

It is your responsibility to make sure the body shop is reimbursed for the repairs to your car, so you will recieve the check from the insurance company. Make sure that you get it to the body shop on a timely basis.

Step 7

Show all your friends how great your car looks again.

Enjoy your car again, knowing that it was properly repaired by the body shop.
